Housecats Amongst Us

My friends, Al and Andi, lived for awhile here in our little town on the prairie, mainly while they were in college, but moved to Chicago several years ago.

We still keep in touch.  They travel as public ambassadors cum fundraisers for Emmaus Ministries.

It’s a nice feeling for me when I get an e-mail from Al when he is sitting in some coffee shop with wireless connection, waiting to get repairs done on the van.
How special is that?  or maybe How bored can he be?

This morning, having received an e-mail obituary for their cat
Sydney (may she Rest in Peace)

I sent Al’s beautiful writing as a forward to a few folks I thought might remember either the humans or the cat.

Yesterday morning, after 12 years of being the soul of our home, Syd went on to hang out with Jesus and St. Francis and hopefully not bite their toes in bed like she often did with ours.
She was the cat who convinced me that cats were alright, and we’re grieving the spaces she occupied in our life.
We feel blessed to have shared such a great length of time with her.

In reply, another friend sent a
YouTube link for Nora, the piano playing cat.

Then, this morning’s paper included LIFE magazine with a cover story about Toygers, which are the size of housecats, but with pretty stripes like a tiger.

I’m telling ya, cute kittycat overload.

I think I’ll go give each of ours a pat on the head.

Cabin Fever

My guys and I are having housemate annoyances.
Things like he leaves his bowl on the table, his guitar car next to the tv, his shoes in the middle of the room.
I do thoughtless things like borrow the best can opener for the church dinner and keep the car from 1 to 8 pm without asking about errands or evening meetings.

So, what do we do?  Stay up until midnight talking.  In the middle of the week when we all are tired to the bone.

There may be some folks who can be organized, schedules precise, arrivals prompt.

We are not usually amongst ‘em.  We do our best.

Love will keep us together.

A Batch Done this Morning

Tonight at church is the first of the Family Fun Nights planned for Wednesdays.

We serve supper at 5:15pm, then the family groups move along doing crafts and drama and lessons, using the same plans as Vacation Bible School.

the Oatmeal Currant Walnut Cookies are ready

No Germs, Please

The weatherman says the temp reached a high of 46o.  Current temp is 39, so the downspout the other side of the wall is still dripping.  The places shoveled are dry wherever the sun touches.  The mountains of snow are a bit less.

However, the ability to see over the piles of white stuff and watch for oncoming traffic is still a matter of chance more than skill.  I was out at the high school today and watched two near collisions at the exit to the student parking lot.
Youth and skill still need experience.

I’m worn out.  My ankles and knees ache.  Those halls are long, and the floors hard.  I lost count of how many times I went to the Teacher’s Workroom, the office, the cafeteria.  At least my errands were all on one level, so no stairs.  I learned that even adults carrying something still need to acquire an elevator pass.

It was a good day.  Previous jobs, as well as my schooling are helping with this TA Sub.

There is a flu-type virus going around.
Begins with head throbbing, then moves along to all-over ache.  About half of one class was absent.

I’ve got the head thumpathumps.  Probably too much screen time causing eyestrain.

An analgesic and rest in bed overnight should take care of it.

Wednesday is a big event at church.

Gotta be ready.

Day Planner Full

No matter how busy I am, I still have to empty the cat litter box.  Nothing quite like walking across the laundry room all set to empty the dryer and fold the t-shirts, but to catch a whiff of heaven knows what ails ‘em.
Every other activity set aside to make that stench be gone.

I’m glad the weather got a bit warmer today.  The snow will melt and the furry critters can do their business on the far side of the garage like usual.  Right close to the neighbor kid’s treehouse.  Ain’t nobody ever complained about it.

Three of us members of the Kitchen Staff went grocery shopping for the suppers of Family Fun Nights.  It’s difficult to shop even for a family, so doing this for a guesstimate number of people and stay within the budget requires much collaborating and calculating.

We walked two stores, loaded and unloaded the car, stacked foodstuffs on the counters in the church, made a list and timeline.
One more tally mark for good company and activities.

While still in the building, someone from the HeadStart Room called my name.  Turns out, she and I were students at the community college at the same time.  She’s a TA Sub for that program, and was sitting there during her lunch break with crochet hook going a mile a minute.
Like Minds in a small world, eh?

Actually I got called to be a TA Sub at the high school again this morning, but had to say I had another committment.
This is a boost to my confidence, this standing firm and saying No when needed.

Son Lucas tells us about the PhD programs he has applied at and been accepted for.
As a mom, I worry about him going often enough to the dentist and whether he got new shoes before the snowstorms hit.
We each must have our priorities in order.

The cat wants to be let in.  Again.

How long does it take for a foot of snow to melt?

When Birds Gotta Sing

As the latest snowstorm moved on yesterday, leaving us with just over 4” more, Husband fired up the snowblower and cleared out the driveway, plus both front and back walks.  He seemed to be doing fine, so I stayed inside for routine chores.

Later, as he went away in the car, I noticed a couple places where the machine isn’t able to touch up.
I pulled on boots, coat, hat, warm leather gloves, then went out to work with the shovel.

The sun had come out, no machines were busy just then.
Just the sound of scraping with my shovel, and my own grunts and sighs.

I could hear a couple male cardinals and a female calling back and forth.  No doubt, we are going to have another nest or three somewhere in the trees and bushes of the neighborhood again this year.  Last year’s redbird family was quite the source for our entertainment.

This morning, I was reading the website of a newspaper back in the Ohio Valley where I grew up. Scott Shalaway’s column explains a few things about someone else’s view of cardinals.

She Said It So Well

Every once in awhile, I can write about something I feel strongly about.  Usually in such situations, I’d rather talk it out so I can read facial expressions.

Today I caught up several days of reading over at Susie’s Place.

She has some thoughtful writing about Public Displays of Hatred.

Good Company Again

Every once in a while, a mom can get it right.

This morning, after being chauffeur for Husband, I decided to drive the extra half block and stop for the drive-thru at McDs.
While waiting, I thought that more than coffee might be needed for the college student son who was up late into the night, doing what I believe was research or group study or ensemble practice or lesson plans.
He had equipment loaded into his car and backpacks across both shoulders.

Gads, that kid is busy!!!

I ordered two #4 breakfasts, with two regular black coffees.

Since I was headed home, and there is real half-‘n-half in the fridge, I didn’t want to waste time having somebody else do the lightener.

I was going to serve him breakfast in bed, but he said he doesn’t like doing it, so he came out into the kitchen.
We putzed around getting ketchup and cream and reheating hashbrowns in the microwave.

Mother and Son sat down to a meal together!

He thanked me at least 3 times before he went down the hall to grab a shower.

Like I said yesterday, it’s nice to have a good companion.

Pretties through windows

These are applied to the east window in our bedroom.
They replaced some cute little critters carrying garden harvest.

Now I’ll get to look at Valentine hearts every morning.

Husband brought four chocolate covered cherries home for me.
The high quality ones, from the chocolate specialty shoppe.

The kind when I have to sit still with a cup of good tea and really bask in the aura.
I’ll get to do this four times.  Fewer if I decide to share.
Fortunately, nobody else in the house likes chocolate covered cherries half as much as I do, so every one of the little yummies is mine.

For dinner, we had decided to go out into the country to the little place on the road to the lake.  The streets and roads were all plowed by Wednesday evening.  In some places, the piles were over 10 feet high, but we could see pavement all the way.

The sunset over snow-covered fields was beautiful.  On the right side of the road was a sign saying Deer Crossing, and on the left was a herd of deer feeding, at least 15 in numbers.
Husband slowed the car down even more.

The roadside diner was closed.  The drive had been cleared, but only nightlights were glowing.  Maybe the weather worked against business.

On the way home, DOF took this picture.  He also tried to pull off into a tractor run to get a better look at the deer in the field, but the headlights spooked ‘em.  Watching them leap away, their gracefulness would make Rudolph envious.

I’d had my heart set on a burger with the works, so we stopped by the drive-thru at McDs.

One of the advantages of being married awhile is being okay when plans are altered.
The diner will still be there another time, and food is food so long as we have a good companion.

The ride through the snow, the sunset, the deer made some great memories.

Gray and White and Gold

We’re having a Snow Day today.  Before daylight, I was on the computer looking at websites for updated information.
Schools, Universities, everybody except the neighbor’s dog is indoors.  updated to add:  he was on their porch, but went inside in less than 10 minutes.

But my dentist was open. I called first thing this morning, and somebody answered.
Husband volunteered to be my chauffeur.  He said he’d take his book and wait.

We put the car in a little spot where the wind blew a drift.  He shovelled a path to the door for me.
Well, Open until Noon, the Receptionist was busy calling and cancelling afternoon appointments.  The building is on a little side street, usually forgotten by the city snow plows.  And doc said his 4-wheel drive truck with blade would not start today, depsite having been in the repair shop last week.  He usually plows the parking lot.

I’m getting a gold crown replaced.  I believe the thing is a teenager, and there was a bit of decay under it, so the time has come.  I hate the smell which happens when the drill is sending off tiny parts of a tooth.  I don’t know if it’s the rotten part leaving or the metal causing heat, but that smell is nasty.  Always reminds me of the dentist office.

The temporary is enamel color, as will be the permanent.  My set of 5 examples of expertise will not match any longer.  I remember when a little girl in the Pre-K room ask why I have so many shiny teeth when I laugh.  My response was that the dentist likes me.

Doc asked if I wanted to keep the gold, maybe get it melted into something pretty.  I told him No, it reminded me too much of that scene in Schindler’s List where the crowns were getting pulled.  He can consider it a tip.  His assistant giggled, but by then I had tools in my mouth and couldn’t ask why what I said was funny.

I’m half-heartedly doing some laundry folding, alternating with checking what is going on in Blogland.

Woolgathering has a picture which gives me a twinge of being homesick.  As I mentioned in her comments, I grew up along the Ohio River, so to see Pittsburgh gave my heart a lurch.

Pete’s permalink isn’t working for me, but you can go to Terminal Ward for the date 13 Feb 07 and see pictures of the snow in our town.

We’ve also added A Normal Backyard to my Favorites in the sidebar.  A camera in Dan’s hands is a thing which brings beauty.

Heh, heh.  Our neighbors kitty-corner are just returning to the house with skis on their feet and poles in their hands.  Must have needed to get out for some exercise.

My mister is out in the garage working on the snowblower.  He says the fuel has evaporated.  We never had to use the machine last winter.

He’s got hours of labor ahead of him.  The weatherman says this storm will go on until midnight.  Who knows how much drifting will happen with the wind going so strong.

Gonna get going on the next basket of laundry to fold.
