Real Life has taken over

My only day off this week.  I’m a TA Sub in the Special Needs Dept. at West High School.  Seems like all the Regulars want to use their personal days before the end of the semester.

Today, Husband had a dentist appointment.  I went with him and crocheted in the waiting room.
Then we ran some errands.  He said he felt good enough to do the driving.

When we got home, he fixed a protein shake ‘liquid lunch’ and went off to work.  I could never do that.  I usually take the afternoon off if I have to get a filling, then come home and take a nap!

Coming from the basket in the corner, the smell of dying bananas was overpowering the kitchen.
There was naught to do but bake 2 loaves of banana nut bread.  I took one loaf while it was still warm down the street to a good neighbor.  There’s only 2 of them in their empty nest, so I mentioned that if a full loaf was too much, he should carry some on to another friend before it would get stale.
He says no chance, he loves my baking.

The laundry was clean, but waiting to be folded and sorted.  I emptied 5 baskets, and put away the linens.  For the guys, I just set their piles on their beds.  They can live with a bunch in full view the way I do, or they can put their own clothes away.  I’m a bit mean like that…laundry duty goes only so far, no further.

When Husband got home from his job, my new Donny Osmond cd was playing.  He just had to turn it off.  I guess Donny’s voice is an acquired taste.
We all love the Alison Krauss cd.

We watched the tv show HOUSE, MD.  I made a baby hat on my knitting loom. Husband was doing something with a laptop computer.  Our ADD brains are multi-tasking.

There is a girl cat on the window sill to the left of me, and a boy cat on the shelf behind me.  I guess it is time we all went down the hall and have the mattress do what we paid for.

Hold good thoughts for me at the job.  I’m having a revival of old knowledge from my nursing days more than the recent classes in education and math.
Apparently I’m doing alright, the office assistant keeps calling and setting up my work hours.  There are some dedicated teacher aides on that wing of the building.  The $money is good, better than I was earning after years at the daycare center.

When I walked across the stage a year ago, I would never have imagined where I would find myself this month.  I can tell my body has aged 30 years since my LPN days.

All the more reason for ongoing exercise…hear that, Youngsters?

Sorry this seems a bit mixed up.  I really did earn an A in Composition 102, so I know about sentence structure and subject lines and wandering from the theme.

But I do gotta get to bed.

Saturday Happenings

A fun weekend this has been so far!

Friday afternoon there was an end-of-semester gathering at the C.o.B. Dean’s house, complete with yummy hor d’oeuvres and choice of drinks.  Husband and I had a nice time.  She lives in a tastefully decorated home in a lovely neighborhood.

That evening we stayed in, watching NUMB3Rs on tv, eating popcorn and drinking root beer.
I crocheted two crosses to tuck into graduation cards.  This is a lean year for those.  In 2003, I had 16 names on my list.

Saturday morning was our breakfast date. I surprised the waitress by ordering the #3 breakfast with biscuits and gravy, rather than my usual #1 with pancakes.

Then we ran an errand to Dick’s Sporting Goods, looking for bicycle parts. The one shown here will be going to Middle Son, Lucas. Even though it was in good condition, it is being upgraded to Excellent, since the kid uses a bike as his primary means of transportation (aka he has never bothered to get a driver’s license or own a car).

Across the street to W*LM*RT for the rest of the shopping list.
While the mister was in the hardware aisle, I scooted over to pick up A Hundred Miles or More, the latest cd by Alison Krauss.
I received a check in the mail, so it was burning a hole in my pocket.
I also cruised through the crafts department. Our store is going to be re-modeled, and the craft corner will be closed. Several items are going on Clearance. I grabbed up 9 skeins of yarn at $1 each to store in my stache stash box.

When we got to the checkout, I reached for the little bar to separate Husband’s stuff from my stuff. He took it away, said he would pay. Consider the cd as a Mother’s Day gift.  Around here, yarn on clearance is a given.
So there is still cash in a bank envelope in the zipped pocket of my purse. I might need it for when I leave town the end of the month.

At home, I put the cd into the stereo and began baking oatmeal cookies. This activity is high on the list of my favorite things to do. Half the batch is going to a dinner this evening at church, and half stays home for us.

Meanwhile, Husband has the bicycle up on the repair stand on the patio. We keep going in and out of the house to talk and see what the other is doing. I tried going out to eat lunch at the table, but he was spraying lubricant on the chain. He came inside with an inner tube in his hands, but I didn’t want new plastics anywhere near food which will be going out to the public.

As the afternoon goes on, the sun seems hotter. We are really missing the shade from the three trees we had cut down last fall. We’re supposed to wait awhile before we plant new ones.

Gonna go now.  Hope your weekend is going well!

Turned out Lovely, not boring for me

Okay, folks, it has been awhile since I wrote for the blog.  Not only was I at a paycheck job, my evenings were devoted to crochet a blankie on deadline.

The mother’s Due Date was May 19, so I had set my finale to be May 12, a week beforehand.
The arrival of the baby came almost a month early, on April 24, and he had to be taken to a very watchful hospital unit.
He’s doing fine, and will be released, um yesterday, I think.

Anyway, the border of the afghan got fastened off this morning.

100% bedspread cotton measures 34” x 36”
double crochet stitch using a size 1 steel hook

When the phone rang this morning, I thought it might be a request for me to come in again to work as a TA Sub.  I was somewhat relieved that it was only a reminder for the mister has an appointment at the dentist office.

So, I settled in to finish the scallop edging of the border on the blankie.  After a few minutes, whether Chris was still sleeping or no, I had to have some entertainment.  There can only be so much interest to listen to the motor of the refrigerator.

I picked up the remote for the tv and began flipping channels.  Martina McBride was singing on a stage set up in the street of New York City.
Ah, yes, Mother’s Day is being celebrated on The Today Show.

As I was working my way past the second corner (getting the point to lay flat can be quite trying with the scallop pattern), that show ended.

I hit the clicker some more.  Ah, yes, The View, where 4 co-hosts outshout each other while wearing microphones in their bosoms.  It does look like Barbara Walters has the final say on a subject, no matter that Rosie has a more harsh reputation.

The last stitch got done as the credits began to roll.
On some things, I’m pretty good with timing.

As I laid it out across the patio table, I noticed the color flow.  The balls of thread were purchased at odd times, definitely not the same dye lot.  Sometimes the blues stayed together, making an unintended geometric pattern.
Cool picture, in the mid-morning light.

Whatever.  It is cottony soft, with some feely quality.
I think this one is the 10th I’ve worked this way, and all the mothers say they just love having such a versatile cover for the baby.  Machine wash and dry, too.

Yesterday at the Yarn Group meeting, one of the others came over and said that working on a blankie like this would be so boring—the same stitch over and over again.
She totally misses my intention of fulfilling that exact reason.  I work on this kind so that I don’t have to think about changing color, or count the pattern.  Just pick up the next loop and work it, over and over until the blankie is big enough to be used well.

Hard to believe I use a smaller hook, but the same size thread, to make the bookmarks.

Speaking of, I have to get 2 done by Sunday for high school graduations.

Kelli’s Song for Amy

My friend Amy had a birthday last month.  At her dinner, her youngest daughter gave a CD as a gift.  It is a recording of Kelli singing a song she wrote herself for the special occasion.

Here is the explanation and the words to the song, which I blatantly copied, then posted here.

Sunday, April 22, 2007

What this is.

So I wrote a song for my mother for her birthday….this is it, she wanted it available to family members, so this was the easiest route. Please do not judge me, nor throw things.
Also keep in mind that A.) I don’t sing for a living
B.) it was my first song that I’ve written, and recorded, and also it was done in an intimidating envirornment.

Young and alone, left my one home, what will I do with a baby right now.

Always took time, always took love, just to get me to here
You made the space, did what you could to help me find, a way to be. All, all that I am, I owe to you.

The look in your eyes, told me not to cry, I knew by your voice you were willing to try.

Always took time, always took love, just to get me to here.
You made the space, did what you could to help me find, a way to be. All, all that I am, I owe to you.

Family I have now, a home to call my own. A beautiful daughter to teach what you taught me.

Always took time, always took love, just to get me to here.

You made the space, did what you could to help me find, a way to be. All, all that I am, I….all that I am….all that I am….all that I am I owe to you.

This is a link to a myspace page with Kelli singing.

It was written as a birthday gift, but it could be a good rerun for Mother’s Day.

Thanks, Kelli.

and Happy Belated Birthday, Amy.

Visitors a bit off course

Yesterday afternoon, Mahalia was at the window going nutso.  I mean, she was pushing with her paws on the glass, a low rumble from deep in her belly was making a weird sound from her mouth.

I came over to see whatever would be in the yard to bother her so much.

Although there are only 3 ducks in the picture, the 4th duck was closer to the house and was what was causing all the ruckus from the cat on the shelf by the window.

We are at least a half mile from the creek, and many miles from a pond or lake, so I guess these visitors were a wee bit off course.

When they flew away, in a diamond formation, I could hear the beating of their wings.

Nature, up close and personal.

Blue and Green Lap Robe

Usually, when I’m doing a crochet project, I work on one item until I am done and then move on.  This last month has been very different in that I began a baby afghan and put it into my crochet bag, so I work on it when I am at a guitar recital or a meeting or during Fellowship Hour at church.
When I was working a few days at the high school, I couldn’t take my crochet bag, but dropped a ball of 4 ply cotton and one hook into my school bag.  This came in handy when I had a couple extra minutes during a bus ride, so I have part of a potholder done.

Meanwhile, at home, I have partial skeins of yarn all in a row on the coffee table for working on a lap robe.  They are laid out for easy viewing because I wanted to decide the order to work stripes and colors.
The projects from scraps can often put my skills as a visionary into overdrive.  I’m more of a step-by-step person, so when I tie off the last row and hold up the finished blanket, I’m almost as surprised at the ending as anybody.

this lap robe got done last evening

crocheted with a size G hook and 3-ply sport acrylic yarn
measures 32” x 38”  earmarked for the county nursing home

Flowers over There

It seems the bluebonnet flowers are blooming in Texas.

There are pictures at The Lawdog File, and also Army of Mom.

My sinuses are beginning a twitch with just looking, but oh, I can see how one gets sentimental.
Nothing quite like kiddies and flowers.

Learning something new for something nice

About a week ago, a lady from the Needlework Group and I took a class at Michael’s Craft Store.  We were getting a lesson working with the Knifty Knitter round loom.  I had bought one with money from Christmas, but wasn’t having much luck trying to figure out the project booklet which came with it.

I really want to know how to make cute little baby hats to put into the box of donations for the newborn nursery at the hospital.  I’ve tried three different crochet patterns, and I just didn’t like how they come out.

The loom is quite easy to use, with its winding yarn around
and the little hook included in the kit

the teacher was very helpful with her advice and patient with her demonstration

I am doing some nice practice projects

One of my I-wannas

In April 2002, I was in Row 4 at Braden Auditorium on the ISU campus for a concert by Donny Osmond.  The ticket had been a Christmas present from my long-suffering spouse, who knows well of my crush on he-who-wears-purple-socks.
It was well worth the money and the weeks of anticipation; the guy knows how to run a show, and has a wonderful personality for being on stage.

I already own several albums aka CDs of the man from Utah, and this morning I learned there’s a new one out!! featuring songs I remember from my teen years younger times.

There’s a nice little video on that AMAZON site, which sent my heart all aflutter.  Donny Osmond walking along a path beside the river takes my breath away.

It looks like I have reason to be setting aside a few bucks and save up for a new gift to myself.  The way my schedule is filling, I might maybe have time to really listen sometime this summer!

Blue Star

Spring has finally arrived here in our little town on the prairie.
The side yard has violets and dandelions and bluebells.

Last year the flowers looked better because there wasn’t such a cold snap as we had about 10 days ago.  Also, we had three trees cut down late last summer, so I think the bluebells are disappointed with us.  They grow better if there is a bit of shade.

I was busy working as a Teacher’s Aide for three days last week.  It was a bit stressful, seeing that I was in an unconventional (and confidential) situation, but I’m told that I did as well as could be expected under the circumstances.
The gig was supposed to have continued on through the beginning of this week, but the office assistant called on Sunday afternoon to tell me that plans had been rearranged.  Imagine being hired by the school district as an office worker, then using up a weekend afternoon making phone calls for Substitutes.
Duty above and beyond.

On the hobby front, I’m ahead a bookmark and two potholders.

these have no designated recipients, which never lasts long

There was a Blood Drive at church, and I was a volunteer in the Escort position.  We collected 40 units, our highest number ever!  I didn’t even try to donate, my last trip to the lab told me my iron is still a bit low.  Maybe that was why I was craving a hamburger for lunch.  I do miss a good Wendy burger, and haven’t found a reasonable replacement.

During the week, I read the news on the ‘Net, but we get the newspaper delivered to the porch on Sundays.  I do like that quiet time of folding the paper just so, then laying it out next to my bowl of oatmeal, so I can read while dipping the spoon.

A nice article caught my attention

A name seemed familiar… ah, my husband’s former co-worker is having a belated bat Mitzvah.

I usually give a crocheted cross at baptism or church transfer, but for a Jewish ceremony, that might not go over so well.
As it happens, there is a crochet pattern on the back of the page, the dog-earred, laminated, photocopy of instructions for religious symbols I’ve had since before I got married.  That blue Star of David seen in the corner of the picture up there is the first I have ever worked up.

It took quite awhile beside an open window on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but I think the lady will like it.

I’m in my element when I’m trying to figure out a new crochet pattern.  I learned in one of my college classes that if a pattern is followed and the outcome is known, then the skill is a Craft.
I don’t care to remember what conditions are for Art.

I’m working all our bedding through the laundry.  The buzzer for the dryer is going, but I think the next load will be hung out on the line.

It’s a fine day in the Spring!
