Starting to get busy

Yep, the phone rang at 6:01am for a TA Sub job
at the junior high closest to the house, so I will walk

Gotta put down my crochet hook for awhile.

Welcome to the new school year!

Good Things are Here

I am in the middle of baking some Zucchini Bread, with sugar and spices laid out all over the table.
There is a beef roast in the crock pot as well.

A knock on the door from our latest mail carrier.
I believe she is the permanent one until the routes get revised again.

Anyway, I had to sign for a package from another country.

Husband bought some ADDI crochet hooks from E-Bay!
sizes 2.0mm through 6.0mm = a total of NINE

FOR ME!!!

I am hyper-ventilating with glee!
already plotting which yarn goes with each hook

Good Golly!  what a Gift!

However, the oven is pre-heated, and my tv show won’t be for an hour yet, so I had better get the bread mixed and into the oven.

Hats and Yard Sales

Having used Christmas gift money to buy a coveted peg loom, I figured I should use it to knit more than the one baby hat donated to the Relief Sale last Spring.

It was purchased from DaLooms.  Since their handmade loom orders are filled as they come in, it took about a month to arrive.
The gauge is called Fine Sett Baby Loom, and the pegs are only ¼” apart, which is ju-ust right for using 3-ply sport weight yarn.
Each hat takes about 6 hours to knit, since the yarn is so fine and the pegs small and close together.

these colors were purchased when the yarn was on sale at Hobby Lobby

the label calls ‘em multi shades, but the effect of knitting on a round loom makes the pattern come out as a spiral

this one was a weird yarn with all the little lumps

it sure gets good compliments from folks who have seen it
and nice and warm for a little head

I went out into the neighborhood on my bicycle to check out some yard sales.  My mental motto is “If I can’t get it back home while riding the bike, then I don’t need it” but I am getting exercise on a nice morning.

Sure enough, good stuff

a winter coat for me $3 (my current one has served 8 winters)
a vhs tape starring Harrison Ford in the movie $1
a serving bowl for the church kitchen $2
two t-shirts to sew into tote bags $1
bake set of 4 small loaf pans $1
little cloth purse for craft use 10¢

see how much fun I have for less than $10?

At two different stops, the hostess was asked the price of the bicycle.  One did not even know what the customer was talking about, but I spoke up to say it was mine and not for sale.
The other place, the girl looked the age to be a college student, was quite persuasive, saying she would buy it, REALLY.

So I asked how would I get home if I sold my bike? and she offered a ride in her dad’s van there!
and what surprised me was that I hesitated a couple seconds before saying NO
knowing full well that I could not come to love any other bicycle as much as I do for this one

Ah, Yes, a good morning, indeed.
the last Friday before school begins

the School Year is come,  with Prayer and Songs

In case you didn’t notice the announcement written on hundreds of signs in yards all over town, this evening was the service for Opening the School Year in Prayer out at Eastview Church.

I got there early enough to find a nice seat away from anybody wearing perfume, near a light so that I could see well enough to use my crochet hook and yarn, yet still be able to read a screen (I sure do miss a hymnbook).

This is Year 11 for the meeting (I’ve been to 9 of them) where folks gather to pray for a good school year.  Nobody gets missed, prayers are for the students, their parents, the teachers, aides, cooks, bus drivers, administration, college professors, the neighbors of the buildings—we all get a phrase and a blessing.

There is a Praise Band, with words to the songs projected on screen(s), a couple solos, a scripture reading, and open microphone so anybody can be heard talking to the Lord.  The song leader was our newspaper carrier many years ago, but I didn’t know then that he has such a nice voice and musical talent.

Just before the opening music, a family came and sat down in the row where I parked myself.  The mother’s perfume was sweet but not overwhelming, so I stayed put.  A little boy about 7 years old sat with one seat between him and me.

I stayed sitting for the first several songs, working my crochet hook on a light blue dishcloth.  The little guy would glance over to watch, but as soon it seemed I might notice him, he would look away.

I finished the border during the last verse of the last song.  When the lights came up, a principal of a junior high school came over to say Hi, and to ask if I’m gonna be a TA Sub again this year.  Well, Sure, See Ya There!

The little boy was moving away with his family, so I made my excuses and caught up with him.  I handed over the dishcloth, saying he watched me crochet it so he could have it.  His mother looked stunned, which made me backtrack my thoughts a bit.  In a church service I cannot talk to a child?  Is Stranger Danger really too crazy?

The dad realized my intent, nudged the boy who was examining the cloth.  “Say Thank You”  He looked up at me in hero worship.  “You made this, just tonight! Thank You!”  then he turned to let his little sister about 5 years old touch it.
the dad nodded his own Thanks, while I leaned over and told him that the crochet hook keeps me from biting my fingernails, so I’m glad to have something useful at the end of the evening

When I got home, Husband asked if we have made sure the whole community has prayer support so that school can start.

Sure Thing, we’ve got showers of blessings, and I’m still humming Shine Jesus Shine.

Movie(s) watched so no chores done

Over the weekend, we rented a dvd movie of Gran Torino starring Clint Eastwood

Husband wrote about it at Decrepit Old Fool.

there is much much cussing in the movie, the use of guns,
and a girl with bruises implying worse

but I just know that my dad would have related with it
because he was a Korean War veteran, liked to keep our property all spiffy, worked in a steel mill for years, lived in a house full of women

and he loved Clint Eastwood movies, saying that he and Clint were born the same year so their lifetimes overlapped (Clint being only 10 months older)

Monday, I watched Charlotte’s Web on a vhs tape purchased at a rummage sale for 50¢
while crocheting the last few rows of the body and the first row of the border for the baby blankie

so I guess today should be doing some actual household chores or sumthin….

Sunday, Sweet Sunday

Today my memory is all gone away.
Must be the heat. Real Prairie Summer happened overnight.

There was a breakfast this morning for Sunday school teachers of the coming year.  I’m a Substitute, and had an invitation.  Did not remember at all, until the leftovers were served during Fellowship Hour.  My book was stuffed into the church mailbox.

This afternoon, I had an invitation to a neighbor’s party, her son who graduated high school with our youngest is now a New York City musician is home and willing to do a bit of a recital.  Sounded like fun when she mentioned it over a week ago, and it was written on the date in my Planner Book.

Meanwhile, Husband and I rented the movie Gran Torino, went up and got sandwiches to go, then made plans for an “at home afternoon in the air conditioning we pay for”.
I completely forgot the music thing until I saw other neighbors carrying their folding chairs around the corner.

After our movie (a great one, my Dad would have loved it)
I set up the ironing board.  I could hear the notes of the saxophone floating on the breeze, but I had work to do at the time.

Chances. Choices. Consequences.

Now I know that everybody is on the edge of the seat waiting for pictures of Lucas and Milly’s blanket to show up either on this blog or the Inbox.  And Yes, we went over to the Atrium of the College of Business where there is adequate light and plenty of space.  Husband took many pictures of the project, by itself and with me.
They still need a bit of loving care before being ready for public viewing.

Meanwhile, since I have finished the summer’s major big work of love, I figured out how to crochet the Diagonal Box Stitch pattern.  There are several spots with instructions on the ‘Net if you have an interest.

the potholder on the left is the first practice = it is two pieces done the same size then crocheted together around the edge
the white cotton dishcloth on the right came next

and now I am working on a baby blanket done in Softee acrylic 3-ply light blue and white which is getting many oooo-s and aaawwwhhhs all over when I bring it out of the tote bag

Gotta go for now.
My backside needs to do some moving using the treadmill.

It’s Not You, It’s Me means I’m Busy

Yesterday morning, some terrible storms blew through the area, so dark at 9:30 that the streetlights came on.  I didn’t have anywhere to go in a hurry, so I sat in the breakfast nook crocheting.  Oscar is so scared of thunder that he scurried down to his hidey-hole under the basement steps.  When I went down to check for water in the basement and to empty the dehumidifier, he slinked out and cozied up to my ankles whilst I was standing beside the sink.  Poor widdle kittycat….

I went out for errands a little while after Noon, when the weatherman said the worst was over.  We had a beautiful sunset, and some cool breezes through the evening.

This morning, there was the sound of chainsaws coming from the north and the south, and a leafblower three doors down.  Clean-up from the storm, I would imagine.  All I had to do was sweep the front porch.  There are a few small branches down on the grass, but I’ll wait until the ground dries a bit more before going to fetch them and tidy up.

Our front stoop is on the west side of the house, facing the Court.  The newspaper is delivered to the front yard, and I can usually sit in the shade out there reading or doing a yarn project, until 10am or so, when the sun is high enough to be shining over the last eave of the house.  One of my most favorite activities of the Summer, sipping my second cup of tea and listening to the neighborhood.

The sign on the corner of the Court has a yellow sticker saying NO OUTLET.  There are only 8 houses, and we have nice yards and driveways to provide living space.

However, an overlander/ intercity bus, full of passengers, decided it might be a shortcut, turning a bit too quickly around the corner where the fire hydrant stands.  From up high where the driver sits, he saw his mistake and slowed down, but did not come to a full stop until he had passed three properties.

I let my crochet hook rest in my lap to watch.

The end of the Court has a tall black walnut tree growing fairly close to the pavement.  The loop is just about big enough for the garbage or a fire truck to maneuver slowly, but this driver may not realize that.
He began to back up, the noise scaring every bird away from every tree and nest.
As he got to the corner, there is really no way to see if cross traffic is coming.  Luckily most drivers are watchful, so a fella in a pick-up truck stopped to allow the bus to get back out onto Gregory Street.  It headed west toward Main, where making a left turn takes awhile.

Just as I was getting back into hook rhythm (the Diagonal Box Stitch pattern baby blanket is more than half done just since Saturday!) a cranberry color Niszan Altema pulled up at the end of the walk.  Two middle-age women inside stopped to ask directions to Old Fort Jesse Road.

The passenger asked what I’m working on, so I had to show the yarn, and my new hook with the square wood handle.  She wrote down the name and said she would look it up.  I gave them directions using “turn right and turn left” phrases, which doesn’t usually help as much as saying “go East on” but I hope they make it to their meeting alright.

Sitting on my front porch is interesting enough, so I can sorta imagine being on the balcony of a nearby complex watching this building When Things Roll Over

It’s about time for me to be getting on with the rest of the day.  At Noon (Illinois time), I have a dentist appt to make repairs to the crown drilled through for the root canal.  After that, who knows?

in the Aisle of the Craft Store

Alright, I will confess.  My little trip to deliver the old newspapers to the recycling bin was actually an excuse to drive onward a few streets to visit H L the craft store.  I had not been there in awhile, and I found a 25% off coupon at their website (although it had not been printed in the paper—marketing alert)

The item I’m looking for is holiday colors in 3-ply sport weight acrylic yarn.  There is a red twist which might work, but I have time to keep looking.

While standing and staring at shelf after shelf full of yarny goodness, I overheard a mother talking to her youngun in the seat of a cart.  The boy was maybe a little over a year old, and he kept slapping his mom’s arm, or tummy, and tugged on her shirt.  I remember that being a signal from my pre-word son that he was umm, thirsty.
This mother told him to “No Hit! Not Nice!” a bit too loudly, considering she was standing close enough for him to smack her arm again.
Then she backed up a little so he could not reach her, and said “If you hit mommy again, I will have to spank you.”

I walked around the end of the lane and almost bumped into a clerk who was busy counting stock.  She turned and looked at me with a wrinkle in her forehead.  “Did I just hear that?” she whispered.  “If you hit again, a spanking?”

I nodded, just as cart with child and young mother came into the aisle.

The clerk winked at me as if we shared a secret.

I’m still not quite accustomed to seeing people the same age as my sons as being parents.  The girl most likely did not realize about her choice of words and actions, and does not have the years of hindsight that I do.  The toddler looked fine enough, tho there did not seem to be any other interaction between mother and son.

Neither the clerk nor I said anything, but I smiled at the child.  I smile at every child I see, but the “stranger! danger!” lessons don’t allow a kid to smile back very often.  This one did not.

I used the coupon on a 4-ply acrylic yarn called Earthy Ombre a bunch of lovely shades of Autumn and it will peg loom knit into a fine hat—maybe nice enough that I’ll keep it for me.
