A Grin for today

Copied from our church e-newsletter, who probably copied it from somewhere else

Thanksgiving Forecast

Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190ºF. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder.

During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other.
Please pass the gravy.

A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to left-overs, dropping to a low of 34ºF in the refrigerator.

Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50% chance of scattered soup late in the day.
We expect a warming trend where soup develops.
By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be in the bone.

We are still missing our girl kitty

One of the saddest sounds I have ever heard
was Oscar just outside the bathroom door while I was in the shower

calling somebody to come and play

He ran his paw along the wood, hollering

When I opened the door,
my legs still damp because of my hurrying

he ran down the hall to the play box
Oscar’s paw

then waited inside while I put the piece of newspaper
near the opening

I grew tired of the game too soon
went back to the bathroom to finish my routine

He sat in the doorway watching me
knowing there would be no more playing for awhile

And now, he is on his pillow beside a sunny window

Just a bit of catching up

First Tuesday in November means Election Day! I already did my part, signed my name on a form at a table with some nice ladies from the neighborhood sitting behind it.

Too bad they were so busy, we usually are able to have a nice catch-up on what all our kids are doing these days.

It was difficult to decide what to do when a few of the folks were running unopposed, and because I left a couple blank, the Judge had to turn a special key to allow the page to go all the way into the bin.

The sun is shining, so I walked across the parking lot to the credit union. Cashed the check paid by the county for me serving on Jury Duty a couple weeks back. Did get to have a nice chat with the clerk there, who had a photo of her grandaughter in a cute little “good witch” costume.

SubFinder told me this morning there were No Jobs Available, so I have list of chores to do at home. And at some time, I want to sit down and figure out the pattern for making booties on the smallest peg loom I already own.

We are managing to get along without Mahalia. People and Oscar are missing our sweet girl kitty. Thanks to all who sent sympathy cards in the mail. Really nice sentiments and signatures.

There goes the dryer buzzer. Perma-press clothes, so I should get them out quick to save from wrinkles.

A New Week Begins

Monday is our wedding anniversary
married 30 years over at DOF’s place

We went out with friends to a place where the cooking is done right in front of the group. Fun to watch, and good eating.

I have to report for Jury Duty in the morning.
My number is in the middle of those selected.
I hope my crochet hook is not confiscated. I could get a good start on a baby blankie while sitting in the waiting room.

also have a book The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd

My mother is doing fine. She drove herself and a friend to church this morning. Not bad for an old broad who had 2 days in the hospital. Her chest pains were inconclusive, and she is allowed to put salt on everything.

Golly, it would be nice if I don’t find writing to be such a chore.

My life seems so ordinary to me, yet others want to see what I’m up to.

Anyway, ya all can wish me luck at the courthouse, and Congratulations for staying with the same guy all this time.

Tenth Day of the Tenth Month of the Tenth Year

Today is 10-10-10 which I did not realize until Husband mentioned it quite late this evening.
Today is my nephew Alex’s birthday.

He was born October 10, 2000, which means he is 10 years old today.
I forgot to send a card, but will soon.

Wow, time sure moves along 🙂

We’ve moved, but not really

DOF here, as in Mr. MrsDoF.   If you notice Diane’s blog is looking a little different, it’s because it’s been moved.  With considerable technical help from Les Jenkins of Stupid Evil Bastard fame, MrsDoF’s Dear Ones has moved from Expression Engine to WordPress, and to Dreamhost site hosting.  There are still quite a few adjustments to be done.

Please excuse the mess while we get the boxes unpacked and everything put away.  But she also has not moved, because you can find her at mrsdof.com just like always. 🙂

This Project was so much Fun to do

this baby blankie is crocheted of Loops-n-Threads sport weight yarn, which is the house brand distributed by MICHAEL’s Craft Stores. It took 3 and a half skeins. I did not measure the inches of the sides, but folks say it is a nice size, and soft for a baby.

Although the wrapper said to use 4mm size crochet hook, I had to go up to an H, which is I think 5mm. I must crochet fairly tight, but the drape looks better.

the pattern is called Tulip Stitch, which is very similar to the Diagonal Box Stitch I worked so hard to find awhile back. The difference is, this pattern begins with a chain multiple 4, then goes straight up, making the edges as the same size. Then I am able to put a nice border to finish. With the DBS, at least one of the sides is full of slip stitches and crocheting on the border is bothersome.

Everywhere I have carried and worked on this, the ooo-ing and aah-ing is abundant.

Something else about it… the gals in my Needlework Group were quite smitten with the pattern and how fast my hook was flying along. So the office made photocopies of the copy I had. the next week’s meeting, I walked in just a little late (my latte took forever to get purchased) and there were 3 friends working on baby aphgans using the pattern. It would seem I set out a good example, and be a good teacher.

It is going to camp for sale on the Crafts table.

Little Bits for my Happyness

In the grocery store parking lot, I was just about done putting the bags in the trunk when a Nissan Altima pulled in to the next space.
I’d say it is newer than my 10 year old car.
A woman about 6 months pregnant got out, walked around to the passenger back door, opened it, and began the task of letting loose a little boy about age 3 from his carseat.
I had to wait to be able to get into my driver’s door, so I told her I liked her car, it is very similar to one that a friend owns.
She said it had been her aunt’s car, so when she passed away, her cousin sold the car to her growing family for the cost of title transfer and new license registration. It was a blessing to be able to have it.
Isn’t that so generous and kind of a relative?

When I was pulling in to the parking lot near the party supply store, I saw a tall guy just getting out of a car. A brief thought passed in my brain “that guy is as tall as my Chris”. I pulled into a space, set the hand brake. As I opened the door, I saw a shadow pass over the mirror, looked up and there stood Chris, looking just a bit amused as he asked “Were we supposed to meet here?”
Well, no, but I was going in for birthday napkins.
He and his friend were looking for a wedding congratulations card.

He then gave me a hug and said it’s nice to see me somewhere away from home.

son Chris’s friend had some time at our picnic table, doing a drawing assignment for an Art class she is taking at the community college. I went out with my knitting nobby, hook, and string in hand. Husband brought over a bicycle and parts he is working on. Chris sorted through a box of magazines he found in his old room.
We were companions for awhile on a lovely Autumn evening.

I asked if she wanted a pair of potholders to help with the wedding gift. She nodded, not quite knowing what was to come. I went through my Crafts Done basket, then carried out a dozen pairs of many colors for her to choose from. The one she picked was yarn colors purchased at WallyWorld in St. C, then crocheted while I was sitting on the deck at my sister’s house. They must have a great aura surrounding, I will never again be able to have that exact situation.
Also handed over a nice handmade dish scrubbie, given to me by a friend. Having a dishwasher, I don’t use one up before my next gift time happens.
The kids will put together a nice gift for the newlyweds.

Topping off all this glad times, when I checked SubFinder last evening, then again this morning, it listed No Jobs Available. This gives me a nicely open day to catch up some housework, and make a few preparations for this weekend when I’m getting outta town for church Women’s Retreat! Yippee!
