Here then Away

Today is when I decided to be free for a Mental Health day.

Actually, it’s catch-up time, with errands to run, towels to fold, yarn items to sort out for donations.
There was one lonesome TA Sub job on the grid, but after Kindergarten yesterday, I don’t think I can do it again today, then carry a loving attitude for the church Nursery tomorrow.
Those younguns each week are most important to me

Besides, Husband is home with what looks like ‘flu, and he might need some help.

The early part of Autumn weather is also calling.
Nobody should be stuck in rooms without windows on a wonderfully glorious day.  Always reminds me of Dad taking us in the truck out to the country to gather black walnuts.

An Extra Special Gift

A grand surprise came my way on Sunday.

You already know about how Husband bought crochet hooks from overseas for me

My friend Lois, seamstress extraordinaire, put together a wonderful crochet hook carrying case.

She listened when I said I did not want a zipper or velcro, since they tend to make noise while I am in meetings.

She made sure there is a cover across the top so that the metal does not rub against the other.

There is detailed hand-quilting around the pattern of the fabric, and strong machine stitches holding each little sleeve in place.

An heirloom (click to see it in all its glory), which I will treasure all my days.

Thank You!

Don’t miss me more than you have to

I am going outta town again, for church conference Women’s Retreat.  The camp is not so good with cell phone nor Innernet connections, not that I want to be bothered anyway whilst I’m sittin’ on the dock at the lake.

See ya again on Monday!

Education Happens

Today’s job was at a junior high in the homeroom for students with Autism (that may not be the most recent and proper term. sorry).

The usual schedule is that once a student has completed a schoolwork type task, the timer is set for some “free choice” time.

So, one of the boys worked a couple pages of Menu Math problems, then chose to go to the computer to watch a program on the PBS website.  He was wearing headphones, but I could see the screen had wolves and buffalo (although he said BISON out loud) and other critters pertinent to a national park.

When time was up, he willingly logged off and gave his seat for the next student to have a turn at the computer.

I asked him something about the wolves.

He turned towards me rather quickly
and said “Not School Work! NO Questions!”

Nothing quite like putting learning into categories

Nice Morning, Just Us

Today is Labor Day in the US of A, a nice third day of the weekend (with lovely weather here) to provide a grande finesse for the Summer.  We took advantage of open-ended hours and pedalled our bicycles across Uptown to have breakfast.

I can highly recommend the Quiche at COSI

although my bike helmet doesn’t exactly provide
an ideal hairstyle

Husband took a comic strip I sent out to my Dear Ones e-mailing list and wrote a whole post about unions

the ironing of the work shirts and boxer shorts is done
the reading of blogs and newspaper and comics is over

so I guess our info agreement for you is complete :smirk:

Just Stopping By

The week has moved along so fast
that I almost forgot all about YOU!

Worked TA Sub jobs for two full days plus one afternoon (didja ever notice that the need to be somewhere 11am to 3pm seems to take more than 4 hours out of a day?) meetings and/or rehearsal at church for 3 evenings in a row, arrangements for looking after the house and cats and yard while we are out of town next week (first time in ages that all of us are going somewhere at the same time)

BUT, my hands and yarns have been busy.  I finished the pastels stripes baby blankie, and began a new one in 4-ply with a 6.0mm hook.  It feels so big, and seems to be going much quicker than the sofftee yarn.
I crocheted a nice tan bookmark for a sympathy card.

With my peg looms, knitted a woman’s hat in Earthy Ombre (autumn colors), a baby hat in pastels, and this one, the only thing I have a picture of.

It is actually by request of a friend from the Yarn Group, she knitted her own mittens to match.

An honor to do it, but even though I followed the pattern, I probably should have knitted one more row before drawing it closed.
I have a smallish head and fine hair, so when she put it on, a bit more of her earlobes showed.
Husband says to stop dwelling on it.  If one hat doesn’t do the job, knit or buy a different one.

The holiday weekend is looking quite full also, and then I’m booked as TA Sub at West High School full days Tuesday and Wednesday, there’s a luncheon at the Activity Center on Thursday, then we are outta town o’dark early on Friday.

I was just as much or more busy when I was raising a family, but it seems like my ability to organize is leaving my brain.  Husband says I allow too much clutter to rattle around in there.

Ah well, know that you are a delightful oasis

Foot in Mouth for the Kazillionth Time

Major goof speaking today.

In the Break Room, I asked a teacher if the baby is due after Christmas, cuz then I would have time to make a nice baby blankie.
She went very very white, and said, Um, No, she’s just “feeling big” today, then scurried into the Ladies Room.

I’m not sure I will be able to look her in the eye next time I’m with a student in her class.

Another room occupant said not to worry, anybody could mess up.

It’s not the first time I have been mistaken, and Yeah, I remember once upon a time in my Thirties when someone asked me pretty much the same question cuz I was gaining weight real fast, but gheezsh, the whole rest of the school year stretches ahead.

We ask so much forgiveness of others around us.

We Laughed at the Same Thing

This morning as Husband and I were walking across the parking lot and into the restaurant for breakfast, we spied a bumper sticker with a picture of a set of rings and the words “My Marriage is Fireproof”.  This became a source of amusement for both of us, which proves that we have learned to join our sense of humor in several ways.

When I got home, I put those words within the quotation marks and did an Internet search.

It seems the bumper sticker comes free within a kit about the movie FIREPROOF, and iffen you are interested, you can do the same as I did with the subject hunt and read all about it, maybe order your own.
We will not be sending away for anything.

Not that we don’t have to make sure our marriage stays on a loving path, but I don’t think we need all the sugar-coating of a Kirk Cameron film.  Just watching the trailer gave me the urge to go brush my teeth.

And bumper stickers remind me of the time when I was a kid and our family went on a weekend getaway to Sea World.  When we got back to the car, we saw every car in the parking lot had a bumper sticker applied, even though nobody had asked for one.  It seemed to be the advertisement of choice for awhile.  If a family went to many places of amusement, the whole bumper would be covered by the end of the summer.
There were many, many upset owners that day, but my dad seemed to be maddest of all, and there was nobody from the park around for him to swear at.

When we got home in the dark, Dad sent all of us inside to go to bed, but I could hear him walk around to the back where he kept his guy stuff in a shed, then back around to the car.  My sister and I watched from the screen window while he held a flashlight to see exactly where to put some kind of fluid on the bumper sticker with a rag.

That did not seem to work fast enough, so he put that bottle of fluid away, then into the kitchen rummaging around in cabinets.
Mom went out to tell him he should wait until morning when he could see better, but he said he did not want the thing to have time to set.
I went to bed then.

Next morning after a bowl of cereal for breakfast, my dad sent me out to the car bumper with a butter knife and told me to scrape off as much of that sticker as I could work at.  He said he would pay me 50¢ if I got it off.
Well, I tried to wash it off with dish soap and water, the way a label comes off a bottle in the dishpan, and scraped with that stainless blade for quite awhile.

When dad came out to see my (lack of) progress, he gave me a quarter for trying.
He tried vinegar, turpentine, a different kind of soap and water, scraping with a putty knife.

Yep, that bumper sticker would be there for the life of the car.

My husband has similar stories to tell about his dad and disdain for visible slogans riding around on a car.

So to see a bumper sticker with a picture of wedding rings referring to a sappy movie was a great scene of the weekend for us.

Here’s hoping yours is also going well…

Center of Attention

This morning, I was chauffeur for a friend who had an appointment.  She says it usually takes about an hour and a half, so I carried along my latest yarn project, a nice baby blankie crocheted using the Diagonal Box Stitch of pastels and pale yellow, finely soft 3-ply yarn.
I am on the Decrease sides of the square, meaning that the yellow stripes are showing up nicely on the diagonal.

The waiting room had many folks who seem to be looking for jobs along the bus routes.  Going outside for a smoke was quite important, with anybody out there making sure that somebody else in the room knew the customer number to come get ‘em and not miss their turn.
And the talkers… twitching… restlessness
in the room was unending.

Which is why my crochet comes in so handy.
I would be a pacer if I don’t keep my hands busy.

The pastels blanket was quite an object to get conversations going.  Guys mention knitting, but I would hold up the hook and say what I’m doing is crochet.  One woman said she learned to crochet the last time she ‘did time’ but does not have the money to buy yarn now.
She asked who I am making it for.
I told her it will be donated to a charity crafts booth.
A guy nodded, saying that everybody’ll get good out of it.

When I got to the end of a row, I had to pick up the blanket and arrange it for the return.
The receptionist noticed it then and gave a small smile.

One very tall fella came over, squatted down beside my chair to be able to look right into my face.  I recognize this, I work in classrooms with Special Needs students, so I set down my hook and looked back at him until he could come up with the words.

“Can I touch it?” he asked.

I grinned from ear to ear, held it up, and nodded.

He straightened up again, tall and proud, then reached out his hand and touched it with finger and thumb as if it would break.  I shook it a bit and told him he could grab on, it was good enough for a baby to wear it out.

This seemed to be a signal that anybody could come over and feel its baby soft goodness.  A little parade of jostling shoulders and reaching hands and nodding heads lasted for several minutes until I could settle in again and proceed to add on more crochet stitches.

When my friend came out of the office, she had to wait a minute for me to get all my stuff gathered and put back into the bag.
One guy commented that I must love to do the work, because I sure have a bunch of stuff to keep track of.

As we passed the desk, the receptionist said that my crochet is beautiful, and Thank You for being so kind to share it.

In my own mind, I wonder what I would do if I don’t have such a wonderful hobby to make beautiful things.
